The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed 2nd baseman Ketel Marte on the 10 day injured list with a left hamstring injury suffered in Friday’s 6-4 win over Washington.
Marte appeared to suffered the injury while running the bases during the first inning of Friday’s ballgame. Manager Torey Lovullo declined to provide any updates regarding the severity of the injury but it’s safe to say that the 31 year old will be sidelined for at least 2 weeks. Garrett Hampson is the most likely candidate to fill in at second base while Marte is sidelined, though the club did promote infielder Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
Tawa will be making his Major League debut whenever he makes his first appearance in a game with the 25 year old likely assuming Hampson’s spot as a utilityman for the club. Many assumed that top prospect Jordan Lawlar may have gotten a promotion to the big leagues, but it would appear for now that the club is content taking their time with the former 6th overall selection from the 2021 draft.
Marte was off to a hot start this season, hitting .346 (9-for-26) through eight games. Fresh off inking a 6 year, $116.5M contract extension, the NL MVP finalist’s production will likely need to be replaced by committee for Arizona.
Up next for the 5-3 Diamondbacks is a 4:05pm ET date with the Washington Nationals as the club wraps up a 6 game road trip.
