The Arizona Diamondbacks have come to terms with second baseman Ketel Marte on a 6 year, $116.5M contract extension. The deal will begin this season and run through the 2030 MLB campaign, with an additional $11.5M player option for 2031.
The 31 year old previously signed a 5 year deal back in 2022. However, after finishing 3rd in NL MVP voting last year, the club looked to lock up Marte for the foreseeable future with a new pact which could reach as high as $149.5M if all incentives are hit.
“You’re looking at one of the best players in the entire league,” General Manager Mike Hazen said. “So our ability to have one of the best players in the entire league playing on our team for a long period of time is a goal of mine.”
Arizona has now handed out deals to pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, Geraldo Perdomo, and Justin Martinez, while also bringing in former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes on a 6 year, $210M pact.
“I think it makes a statement that we believe in the core group of players,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “We’ve identified a very special bond that happens between everybody on this team, and it means we’re going to be together a long time.”
With all the new deals, Arizona has set a new franchise record in terms of payroll during the 2025 MLB campaign.
Marte will receive $14 million this year, $15 million in 2026, $12 million in ‘27, $20 million in ‘28, $22 million in ‘29 and $22 million in ‘30. On the year, Marte is currently hitting .292 with 6 runs scored and 1 RBI.
The Diamondbacks are next in action Thursday night against the New York Yankees.
