Aleksander Barkov Undergoes Knee Surgery

The Florida Panthers were dealt a massive blow this week after captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a knee injury during practice which required surgery on Friday to repair.

Head coach Paul Maurice informed reporters that Barkov would be out several months, and that the club has no official timeline on when he could return to on ice action, putting his 2025-26 season in jeopardy.

“There’s no hiding it – that’s the big man,” Maurice said. “He’s such an important place in that locker room. What we’re going to get to experience now is you’ll get to know some of the other leaders that we have in our room. We’ll get to see other players. At the end of the day, I know there’s the idea of next man up, I get all that, but there’s not a next man for his skates.”

The versatile two-way forward led the Panthers in assists last season with 51, and finished second in points with 71 on the year. The injury comes at a brutal time for the Panthers who will also be without Matthew Tkachuk for the start of the season as he recovers from offseason surgery himself.

All in all, Florida will be without two of their top players through at least December, which could put them in an early season hole that may prove difficult to overcome in the back half of the NHL calendar.

“You never want to see anybody get hurt, especially Barky on the first day, the first practice of camp,” said Anton Lundell. “The mood was a little bit down, for sure, yesterday. We all texted Barky. I talked to him, and he’s doing alright. That’s all we know. We hope it’s going to be a quick recovery.”

Lundell may be the candidate who sees the biggest increase in responsibilities while Barkov is sidelined as he may now be counted on to centre one of the team’s top two lines for the better half of the season.

While timelines remain hazy for Barkov’s rehab, the Panthers media team mentioned that additional details would be provided after completion of the surgery. Given that line, it’s highly likely that the medical team will need to see whether it was a full or partial ligament tear in Barkov’s knee, and whether additional damage was done.

A best case scenario would see him sidelined for the majority of the regular season, but be able to return to the ice for a handful of games before the playoffs. However, how quickly the Finnish forward ramps up his on ice activities will largely depend on where Florida finds themselves in the standings in the homestretch of the schedule.

The Panthers wrap up their preseason on Saturday, October 4th with a matchup against in-state rivals Tampa Bay, before kicking things off for real on Tuesday, October 7th vs. Chicago.
