Magic Fire Head Coach Jamahl Mosley

The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday following the club’s first round exit against the Detroit Pistons.

Mosley had spent the previous 5 seasons with the Magic, compiling a 189-221 overall record. During that time, Orlando qualified for each of the last 3 postseasons, but failed to advance beyond the first round during any such appearance.

“We’re grateful to Jamahl [Mosley] for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” said President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best.”

Expectations for the team were high in Orlando this year following the blockbuster trade to acquire Desmond Bane last summer. However, injuries to Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs, and Franz Wagner severely hampered the team throughout the 2025-26 campaign, leading to yet another play-in tournament appearance.

That, coupled with rumours of locker room discord between some of the team’s players and Mosley had many assuming that a break up of sorts was in the cards once the offseason began. According to The Ringer’s Raheem Palmer, things reportedly got so bad at one point this season that an unnamed “star player” is believed to have told ownership that he would demand a trade this offseason if Mosley returned in 2026-27.

For his part, the 47 year old coach has downplayed any rumours of dissension amongst the ranks. In his parting statement he told fans “It has been an incredible five-plus years, and this organization and city will always mean so much to me and my family. In my heart, I truly hope that during our time here we were able to impact the players, staff, and the Magic organization in a meaningful and lasting way,” Mosely said. “I want to sincerely thank the DeVos family for the extraordinary opportunity to serve as head coach of the Orlando Magic. To our fans, there is nothing but love in my heart. The joy I had coaching this team, in this city, for the people who live here is something I will never forget. All I ever wanted was to make you proud to be Magic fans, and my journey here will certainly stay with me forever.”

Orlando will now enter the offseason in search of a new head coach, with the early reports suggesting it will be one with a strong offensive acumen. After several years of being atop the NBA in most defensive categories, the Magic front office is believed to be looking for a more balanced approach to steward in the next chapter of the franchise.
