According to multiple reports out of Boston, the New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez have come to terms on a new 4 year, $135M contract extension on Tuesday.
The deal will reportedly feature $102M in guaranteed money, along with a $33M signing bonus, which is the largest ever for a cornerback in NFL history. The new pact narrowly edges out the previous record of 4 years and $132M which was signed by Seattle DB Devon Witherspoon earlier this offseason.
The extension ends a months long standoff between the two sides and comes in at the 11th hour before the Patriots kickoff their 2026 NFL campaign against the Seahawks on Wednesday.
Originally drafted 17th overall by New England in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez was named a second team All-Pro in 2024, and a Pro Bowler in 2025 after setting career highs in virtually every statistical category last season. The 24 year old posted 69 tackles, 10 passes defended, and 1 tackle for loss as opposing QBs avoided his side of the field whenever possible last year.
Gonzalez was scheduled to make $2.259M this season and $18.11M in 2027. By signing his extension in the first offseason he was able to ink a new deal, he avoids a scenario in which the Patriots could have used the franchise tag on him in 2028. The native of Carrollton, Texas headlines a cornerback group that also features Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, Channing Canada, and Karon Prunty.
