TCU’s head coach Sonny Dykes has been named the AP Coach of the Year in his first season with the school.
Dykes received 37 of a possible 46 first place votes to become only the 2nd TCU coach to ever win the award. The Horned Frogs finished 3rd in the nation and will take on Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec 31st with a trip to the National Championship on the line.
“It’s the ultimate team award,” Dykes told members of the press. “It’s indicative of literally everybody in our office, coaches, players, everybody, because more so than ever in college football it is truly a team effort.”
“It’s not always like this and I’ve been on both ends and so something like this probably means more to me than it might somebody,” Dykes said. “I’ve been kind of on top and then on bottom, too. I’m always thankful for those bad times because it really truly does make you appreciate the good times more.”
Rounding out the top 5 vote getters was Willie Fritz of Tulane, Josh Heupel from Tennessee, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, and Georgia’s Kirby Smart.
TCU began the season unranked before rattling off 12 straight victories. They then suffered their first loss of the year in overtime of the Big 12 Championship vs. Kansas State.
Prior to taking the head coaching position with TCU, Dykes also had stints with SMU, California, and Louisiana Tech.
