Serena Williams Sets Record for Most Expensive Female Sports Card

Serena Williams already owns numerous sports records. Sunday she broke one of her own when a 2003 NetPro RPA more than doubled the previous record for most expensive sports card featuring a female athlete.

Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions, tweeted the news that the rookie, patch, auto card featuring a young Serena Williams sold for a record setting $266,400. The previous record was held by a 1999 Sports Illustrated for Kids rookie card of Serena Williams which sold for $117,000 in January.

Williams is 1 Grand Slam victory away from the all-time record but hasn’t played competitively since last year’s Wimbledon. The tennis legend has previously dismissed rumours that she plans to retire.

Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian has mentioned that he’s currently putting together “the ultimate Serena collection”, however he claims he missed out on this particular card. The owner of the record setting sale has thus far chosen to remain anonymous.
