SEAHAWKS WIDE RECEIVER DK METCALF DENIES RUMORS THAT TEAMS ARE CALLING SEATTLE FOR A TRADE
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has recently shut down rumors that teams across the league are calling the Seahawks regarding his availability. The news was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who confirmed it on April 4th’s episode of the Pat McAfee Show.
Asked about the trade situation of Titans wide receiver AJ Brown and Seahawks’ DK Metcalf, Rapoport said, “Teams are calling. I know that. I haven’t the sense either organization has done anything to say that they would trade either AJ Brown or DK Metcalf. Obviously, teams are calling.”
“What I think happens now is, you get great players who are not under contract and everyone thinks they’re available,” said Rapoport. “Like that’s just where we are in the NFL. Three years ago, nobody would ever call about DK Metcalf. You’d say, ‘Why would you ever trade one of your best players?’ Now all these GMs are like, ‘Oh! He’s not under contract? Cool. Maybe I could trade for him just like what happened with Tyreek Hill.’ So, I think they want to get a deal done. I think they end up doing it but until they do, teams are going to keep calling the Seahawks and the Titans as well.”
DK Metcalf was drafted 64th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 draft and has only one year remaining on his contract. The 24-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent next year if he and Seattle cannot agree on an extension.
The former Ole Miss wide receiver signed a four-year, $4.6million rookie deal that expires at the end of the 2022 season. His Ole Miss teammate, Brown, was also drafted in the second round in 2019, 51st overall. Brown’s four-year deal also expires at the end of 2022 and is estimated to be worth $5.6million.
The NFL offseason has seen massive big-money moves for star wide receivers including Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill, and the top five highest-paid wideouts have changed dramatically this offseason. Three of the top five – Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, and DJ Moore – have received their new deals in the last month.
With plenty of wide receiver movement across the league, trade speculation won’t die down anytime soon. The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets have already been linked to Metcalf and Brown respectively.
Metcalf took to Twitter to squash rumors of phone calls to the Seahawks asking for a trade saying, “Haven’t heard anything, per @dkm14”
Whether that changes in the future is up in the air and will likely depend on whether another NFL GM picks up the phone and makes a godfather offer for Metcalf, a player that broke the Seahawks’ single season receiving yards record in only his second year in the league.
