While the rest of the AFC West is loading up for a run at the division crown, the Kansas City Chiefs just traded away one of their key offensive weapons. KC is sending 6x Pro Bowler Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a slew of draft picks.
In total, Miami will be sending 5 picks over the next two years to the Chiefs in exchange for the speedy wide receiver. Kansas City will receive a 2022 1st round pick (29th overall), a 2022 2nd round pick, a 2022 4th round pick, and 4th & 6th rounders in 2023.
Also included in the transaction is a new 4 year $120M contract for Hill courtesy of the Dolphins front office. The deal now makes him the highest paid WR in NFL history, eclipsing Davante Adams previous high water mark of $28.5M per season.
The trade comes on the heels of Miami’s latest free agent acquisition, LT Terron Armstead, giving their offense a dramatic new look heading into the 2022 season. The Dolphins emphasis on speed this year is apparent, with 5 starters on the offensive side of the ball with sub 4.55 forty yard dash times.
Hill will join Jaylen Waddle, Mike Gesicki, Chase Edmonds, and Raheem Mostert to form a fleet footed offensive attack for the Dolphins this year. The deal gives Tua Tagovailoa a myriad of weapons to work with, as one of Miami’s biggest offseason priorities was shoring up their offense to help develop their young QB.
Hill posted 111 receptions in 2021 for 1,239yds and 9TDs. The 3x First Team All-Pro was a key contributor to the Chiefs Super Bowl LIV victory, alongside all-world TE Travis Kelce.
With his new deal in place, Hill figures to be a member of the Dolphins through the 2026 season. Reports indicate that another deal was in place between the Chiefs and the New York Jets, however when presented with the two options, Hill elected to take his talents to South Beach as opposed to the Big Apple.
It’s now highly likely that Kansas City targets wide receivers in the upcoming NFL Draft and via free agency. Their current WR group includes Juju Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson, Josh Gordon, and Mecole Hardman.
The move to Miami also reunites the 28 year old with the Chiefs former director of college scouting Marvin Allen, who is the current assistant GM with the Dolphins.
