Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins passed away Saturday morning following a vehicular accident in South Florida. He was 24 years old.
Florida Highway Patrol informed reporters that Haskins was walking on the highway when he was reportedly struck by a dump truck. It’s unclear at the moment why the former Washington QB was on the highway on foot.
Haskins and several of his Steelers teammates were in Florida for offseason training sessions. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin released a statement following news of the incident:
Originally selected in the first round, 15th overall by Washington in 2019, the 6’4” signal caller will be remembered by his teammates for his upbeat personality and willingness to help out others.
Haskins was named the 2019 Rose Bowl MVP, and was a first team All-Big Ten selection in 2018 at Ohio State. During his time in Columbus, the New Jersey native set the Buckeyes record for single season passing yards and touchdowns, and became one of just seven quarterbacks in NCAA history to throw 50 TD passes or more.
The 24 year old started 13 games in his NFL career, all with Washington. Haskins signed with the Steelers in 2021 however did not see any game action. He was expected to compete for the backup spot this season behind new Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
