Major League Baseball has announced that the 2028 MLB All-Star Game will be played in San Francisco, marking the 4th time that the Giants have hosted the midsummer classic.
The All-Star Game will make its first appearance in the Bay Area since 2007, and lines up with the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. While no deal has been made as of yet to include MLB players in the Olympics, there is reportedly progress being made behind the scenes amongst the IOC and players unions.
“The San Francisco Giants are incredibly honored to host the 2028 MLB All-Star Game at Oracle Park,” Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome the baseball world to San Francisco and showcase our city, our organization, and our incredible fans. We’re grateful to Major League Baseball for this opportunity and look forward to creating an unforgettable All-Star experience for fans from San Francisco and around the world.”
“With its passionate fanbase, world-class ballpark, and rich baseball history, San Francisco will be an outstanding host for All-Star Week, which culminates in one of Major League Baseball’s best traditions, the Midsummer Classic,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the excitement of All-Star Week and the celebration of baseball to the Bay Area.”
This year’s rendition was held in Philadelphia, with the Chicago Cubs being tasked with hosting the 2027 event. While Major League Baseball has yet to confirm any plans beyond 2028, there’s a growing belief that the Toronto Blue Jays are the favourites to land the next available event in 2029.
Highlights from the last time the Giants hosted the All-Star Game include the final All-Star selection for Barry Bonds, a home run derby victory for Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and Ichiro Suzuki taking home MVP honours after hitting the first inside the park home run in ASG history.
