Knicks Capture First NBA Championship in Over 50 Years with Game 5 Victory Over Spurs

SAN ANTONIO — The long wait is finally over for Knicks fans.

Behind a gritty defensive performance and a relentless team effort, the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 on Saturday night to clinch the 2026 NBA Championship, winning the NBA Finals series four games to one and bringing the franchise its first title since 1973.

For generations of Knicks fans, the championship represents the end of decades of frustration, near-misses, and rebuilding seasons. On a night filled with emotion, New York delivered one of its most memorable victories, silencing a packed arena in San Antonio in their classic come from behind fashion.

Game 5 was a fitting microcosm of the Knicks’ identity throughout the season: tough defence, disciplined execution, and clutch play when it mattered most. When all was said and done, it was another night which the Spurs had few answers down the stretch as they watched the Knicks chip away at their lead throughout the 2nd half.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, New York’s defence rose to the occasion, forcing key turnovers, contesting every shot, and limited the Spurs’ opportunities in the closing minutes. The championship caps a remarkable season for a Knicks team that entered the year with high expectations but faced questions about whether it could get over the postseason hump. Those doubts disappeared as the season progressed. New York established itself as one of the league’s most complete teams, combining star power with depth, chemistry, and a commitment to defence.

Jalen Brunson, who will likely never have to buy a drink in New York for the rest of his life, saved his best performance for last, dropping 45 points on 14 of 27 shooting. The 29 year old guard added 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals en route to being named Finals MVP, officially cementing his status as a New York sports icon.

On the other side of the ball, Victor Wembanyama had a 19 point, 14 rebound double-double, while Dylan Harper led the way for San Antonio with 25 points.

For the city of New York, the title is more than a championship—it’s the realization of a dream that has endured for more than five decades. Since the franchise’s last championship in 1973, generations of fans had waited for the moment when the Larry O’Brien Trophy would return to Madison Square Garden.

Now, that wait is over.

The 2026 New York Knicks are NBA champions. After 53 years of anticipation, heartbreak, and hope, the league’s most famous basketball city is once again on top of the basketball world.
