The Detroit Tigers are set to usher in a new era, as they are promoting top prospect Max Clark to their major league roster on Thursday. In order to make the move official, Detroit will need to make a corresponding move to their 40-man roster in order to make room for the 21 year old.
On the year, Clark is hitting .276/.368/.434 with 10 homers and 21 steals in 413 plate appearances. However, over his last 32 games, his offence has caught fire, hitting .328/.427/.523 since mid June (155 wRC+). Currently ranked as the number 13 prospect in all of baseball, the left handed bat stayed patient in Toledo this summer as the Tigers cycled through numerous centerfielders this season.
“It’s a process,” said Clark told reporters earlier this summer. “There’s a reason it’s development and there’s a reason it isn’t linear. Just trying to piece a week into a month, into two months, into 12 weeks.”
“I am so glad of the challenge I had in the spring,” Clark said a few weeks prior. “I came out and rocked the first six weeks of the season, forgot how to hit for six more weeks, then came back out of it and got comfortable again. It’s cool to go through the ups and downs of the season and understand how to get out of them and also be OK with failing. …”
“It’s kind of just the way my career has gone. I get there [at a level], I dominate, they figure me out, I figure it back out. Just those little victories building up, that’s only going to help you at the big league level. I think it would be brutal to go without any struggle and then just really struggle in the big leagues, because then you’ve got to figure it out against the best players in the world.”
Between Parker Meadows’ broken arm, James Outman’s lack of production, and recent injuries to Matt Vierling, and Kerry Carpenter, and there should be plenty of at bats for the talented outfielder available at the big league level. What remains to be seen is whether this promotion is the Tigers officially waiving the white flag on the season, and looking to build for 2027, or whether they’ll be surprise buyers at the deadline as they make one final push to reach the postseason.
With Tarik Skubal set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, the Tigers front office has a major decision looming over them in the coming days. For now however, the Detroit faithful will get a good look at the future as Clark will join fellow star prospect Kevin McGonigle on the big league roster.
