Mets Acquire Marcus Semien From Rangers

The New York Mets are set to acquire second baseman Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo.

The deal, which is currently pending MLB approval, was able to be consummated after Nimmo agreed to waive his no trade clause, ending his time with the only club he’s ever known.

Nimmo hit .262 for New York in 2025, adding 25 home runs, and 92 RBIs along the way. The 32 year old is under contract for the next 5 years with $101.25M remaining on his current deal. He’ll add some versatility to a Rangers outfield that recently said goodbye to veteran Adolis Garcia after the team non-tendered the former World Series standout.

If Texas doesn’t add any other pieces, they would theoretically field an outfield group of Nimmo (LF), Wyatt Langford (RF), and Evan Carter (CF). By moving on from the 35 year old Semien, they could play Josh Smith or Ezequiel Duran at 2nd base, or promote top prospect Sebastian Walcott if he has a strong Spring Training.

Meanwhile the Mets will add a Gold Glove infielder to their lineup as they look to bounce back from their collapse down the stretch in 2025. Semien is coming off a down season in which he hit .230 with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs and 62 runs scored across 127 games.

Semien has $72M remaining across the next 3 seasons after inking a seven year, $175M extension prior to the 2022 season. Usually a poster child of health, the San Francisco native dealt with a Lisfranc sprain and small fracture in his left foot last year, which will be something to monitor as he enters the back-side of his thirties in Queens.

It will be interesting to see how New York approaches the rest of the offseason in terms of their infield construction, as they’ll also need to make a decision on Pete Alonso who is a free agent for the second straight year.
