Eagles Acquire WR John Metchie III From Houston

The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired WR John Metchie III and a 6th round pick from the Houston Texans in exchange for TE Harrison Bryant and a 5th round pick.

Bryant, who is preparing to enter his sixth NFL season, has 98 receptions for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns over the course of his NFL career. Tight end became a position of need for Houston after Brevin Jordan suffered a season ending knee injury at practice on Monday.

Unfortunately for Jordan, this marks the second season in a row in which he’s suffered a season ending injury. The 25 year old tore his ACL in Week 2 last year, and had been working his way back for the 2025 NFL campaign.

In Metchie, Philadelphia is gaining a potential diamond in the rough. Now entering his 4th NFL season, the 24 year old missed his entire rookie season while undergoing treatment for leukaemia. A former 2nd round selection of the Texans, Metchie now reunites with his former Alabama Crimson Tide teammate DeVonta Smith in Philadelphia.

Metchie currently leads all Texans receivers in preseason receiving yards with 53 across two games (6 catches), but has been buried on the depth chart behind the likes of Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell in recent years.

Philadelphia believes that the Canadian wideout strengthens the team’s receiver room, as he brings a different element to the field than Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson, and Ainias Smith. Metchie and DeVonta Smith formed one of the most electric duos in college football alongside fellow star Jaylen Waddle as Alabama captured the 2020 National Championship.

Howie Roseman and co. will hope that by reuniting the former teammates, and with an expanded role that Metchie can elevate the Eagles passing game even further.
