Inter Miami Signs Luis Suarez

At long last, Luis Suarez will rejoin former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi on the pitch after coming to terms with MLS side Inter Miami on a deal for 2024.

Suarez and Messi famously spent six seasons together in La Liga with Barcelona FC from 2014-2020. During that time, the dynamic duo captured 4 Spanish league titles, a Champions League title, and multiple other trophies across various levels of competition.

“I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami,” Suárez said. “I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition.”

“I will give my all to bring joy to these great fans I’ve heard so much about while I wear Inter Miami colors, and look forward to reuniting with great friends and players,” he continued. “I’m also eager to meet my new teammates and coaches.”

Suarez is the latest international star to join the MLS club, following Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets who all made the jump to the North American league in recent months. In addition to the star studded roster, former Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino is also at the helm of the club, making for mini-Barca reunion of sorts in South Beach.

The 36 year old striker spent last season in the Brazilian league with Gremio where he appeared in 53 matches for the club, scoring 26 goals along the way. For his efforts, the Uruguayan took home the golden ball award as the best player in the Brazilian Serie A.

“We promised our fans we would pursue the world’s best players to build a squad that can compete at the highest echelons in the Americas,” owner Jorge Mas said in a statement released by the club.

“Coming off an award-winning season in Brazil, Luis will be a key addition to our roster. We will continue to be ambitious and always strive to pursue the freedom to dream.”

The contract is a one year deal, but an option for an additional season is believed to be included, though it remains to be seen whether that is a player or club triggered clause. Financial details of the contract were not made publicly available.
