Dallas Mavericks guard, and current MVP frontrunner, Luka Doncic made sports trading card history this week. Doncic’s 2018 1/1 National Treasures Logoman Patch Auto just sold on the PWCC marketplace for $3.12M.
The sum sets a new record for the largest sale at a public auction of a basketball card. It’s also the first time any of the 23 year olds cards have eclipsed the $1M plateau in a public forum.
“This is the highest price ever realized for a basketball card sold in a verified public auction,” Vice President of Sales at PWCC Marketplace Jesse Craig said in a press release. “When this card went to the block, we purposefully avoided speculation on a price because this was an important moment for the market to decide on the value of Luka’s best trading card.”
“The card stood on its own merits, and the market placed it where it belongs. If you include private sales, Luka now sits between the high sales for LeBron and Jordan. The market confirmed Luka is in rare air in terms of collectability with this sale.”
The sale represents the most expensive basketball card sale of 2022 and puts him amongst the sport’s elite in terms of collectibility.
That being said, the previous owner may be having some serious buyer’s regret at the moment. It’s been widely reported that the individual who put the card up for auction purchased it at the height of the pandemic fueled sports card boom.
As a result, they allegedly paid $4.6M for the card in a private sale in 2021 that has yet to be 100% verified. If true, despite the record setting public sale price, it would represent a loss of nearly $1.5M in less than a year.
Timing, it really is everything.
