It was a scary scene at Citi Field on Thursday as Mets’ first baseman Jared Young had to be carted off the field following a collision with Nolan McLean in the 6th inning. Young was struck in the head by McLean’s knee after the two attempted to field an awkwardly placed roundball off the bat of Justin Crawford.
Young was knocked out cold, and taken to a local hospital for a CT scan. The Mets medical team confirmed that the scan was negative, however the infielder was experiencing concussion like symptoms and would be sidelined indefinitely.
“It was scary to sit there and just know that he wasn’t with us in that moment,” Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said. “He was just somewhere else.”
Manager Andy Green and the athletic trainers were quick to rush onto the field, with a cart being summoned shortly thereafter. The 31 year old appears to have avoided a major injury to his neck, but will need to pass multiple concussion protocols before he is medically cleared to resume baseball activities.
“He’s had a CT scan. Results have come back negative,” Green said. “So, in that sense, it’s very positive. Still experiencing real concussion symptoms right now but has full use of his extremities and feels at this point in time like we’ve avoided the scariest outcomes.”
Philadelphia would go on to win the series opener by a score of 3-0, as the Mets offence largely stalled out following the injury. Young is currently batting .266 with 9 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 46 runs scored for New York this season. He’s appeared in a career high 103 games after having a handful of appearances split between the Mets and Cubs organizations since 2022.
The Mets are once again in the midst of another forgettable season. Currently sitting at 69-84, the team is well out of playoff contention, and will likely be working in some prospects to their next handful of games as they begin to prepare for the future. The club will continue their series against Philadelphia on Friday at 7:15pm ET.
