The Green Bay Packers and tight end Jonnu Smith have reportedly come to terms on a 1 year deal to add the veteran pass catcher to the team prior to the start of the season.
Smith appeared in all 17 games for the Steelers in 2025, but was limited to just 38 catches for 222 yards and 2 TDs. It was a disappointing development for the 31 year old as he was coming off his best season as a pro in 2024 when he was a member of the Miami Dolphins. There, he hauled in a career high 88 passes for 884 yards and 8 TDs en route to the first Pro Bowl selection of his career.
Now, he’ll be joining the 6th NFL team of his career following stints in Tennessee, New England, Atlanta, Miami, and Pittsburgh.
Green Bay was in need of a reliable pass catcher at the tight end position following a series of injuries to their current group. Tucker Kraft will reportedly be available for Week 1, but is coming off ACL surgery and could be eased back into the fold. Meanwhile, Luke Musgrave suffered a neck injury during the team’s minicamp in June and has been on the physically unable to perform list ever since.
That left just Josh Whyle as the lone healthy tight end on the roster, necessitating a move to further bolster their depth. Smith became available after the Steelers released him ahead of the new league year as part of a cap clearing move which netted them $7M in space.
Originally drafted 100th overall by the Titans back in 2017, the FIU alum has appeared in 141 NFL games throughout his career, totalling over 3,500 receiving yards along the way. His addition will likely bump Drake Dabney off the team’s 53-man roster as the team begins their cut down process.
