At this point, you may as well pencil in any Shohei Ohtani card to begin bidding at the 7 figure mark. Nevertheless, a Florida collector just hit the jackpot when he pulled a 1 of 1, Shohei Ohtani Gold Logoman card which features game worn patches from his back-to-back MVP seasons.
Numerous high end collectors had already issued massive bounties for the card, but the final price tag on the unique piece of history was a reported $11 million. Shyne and Secure Collectibles were the purchasers of the card, making it one of the most expensive sports cards of all time.
An unnamed collector reportedly pulled the life changing card at Boca Cards in Boca Raton, Florida, and quickly worked out a deal with Shyne (also known as Matthew Allen) to complete the sale of the redemption card.
The $11M price tag is nearly double the $6.5M bounty initially listed by Allen, so kudos to the collector on his negotiating skills. The deal makes the card the 3rd most expensive public card sale of all time, falling just short of the $12.932M mark set by a dual logoman Kobe Bryan / Michael Jordan card from the 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite series.
“The card just resonated deep with me, and I was like, you know what, I have to get this card,” Allen told ESPN in an interview. “I needed to let everyone know I wanted this card because it was ripping so rapidly that the chances were that it was going to come out soon.”
An Ohtani card sold for $3.365M earlier this year, but this figure absolutely dwarfs anything Ohtani related to date. Not only does it reset the market on Ohtani’s higher end cards, but also turns any future products featuring a 1 of 1 card of the slugger into a quasi-lottery system.
