The Philadelphia Eagles and defensive tackle Jalen Carter have come to terms on a new 4 year extension worth up to $160M if all incentives are reached.
The deal will feature $106M in guaranteed money, and makes Carter the highest paid DT in NFL history in terms of both guaranteed money as well as average annual value ($38M AAV). Across 3 professional seasons, the 25 year old has accumulated 13.5 sacks, 37 QB Hits, and 108 tackles while regularly facing double teams from the opposing team.
With Philadelphia having previously picked up Carter’s 5th year option, the 2x Pro Bowler will be under team control through the 2031 NFL season.
Originally selected 9th overall by Philadelphia out of Georgia, the former Bulldog is already a Super Bowl champion, and has become a cornerstone of the Eagles defensive line. His $38M AAV surpasses the previous record for a defensive tackle which was held by Jeffrey Simmons after he inked a $35.2M extension with the Titans earlier this year.
While the signing takes care of a pressing bit of business for Eagles front office, things could become interesting next offseason. By then, All-Pro defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean will both be extension eligible and looking for sizeable raises themselves. Whether GM Howie Roseman’s emphasis on the defensive line will prove prohibitive in signing both DBs to extensions will likely be the subject of many a Philadelphia-based talk radio show for months to come.
Philadelphia will open their preseason on August 15th when they take on the Baltimore Ravens. They’ll then play against the Patriots and Bengals before opening their regular season on September 13th with a divisional showdown against Washington.
