Steelers Set To Hire Mike McCarthy As New Head Coach

According to multiple reports, the Pittsburgh Steelers have landed on Mike McCarthy as their new head coach on Saturday.

McCarthy will take over from Mike Tomlin who stepped down earlier this month following the team’s playoff loss to the Houston Texans. The 62 year old sports a 185-123-2 career record (.600 win percentage) across a 16 year career in the NFL.

The Super Bowl XLV champion broke into the NFL as an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993. From there, he would go on to hold multiple roles with the Packers, Saints, and 49ers before getting his first shot as a head coach in Green Bay during the 2006 season.

McCarthy would coach the Packers for 12 years, before parting ways with the team in 2018. After a two year hiatus, he returned to coach the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-2024, going 49-35 in the Lonestar State, with 2x NFC East titles, and 3x playoff appearances in his 5 seasons with the club.

Ironically, the Pittsburgh native was Aaron Rodgers coach in Green Bay for most of his career. And with Rodgers future with the Steelers currently up in the air, it will be interesting to see whether a reunion of sorts could be in the works, or whether McCarthy will look to start fresh in his hometown.

While the team has yet to officially announce the hiring, multiple outlets, including Adam Schefter have indicated that it’s a done deal.
