Patriots RB Antonio Gibson Suffers Torn ACL

According to reports out of Foxborough, New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the 2025 NFL campaign.

Gibson is believed to have suffered the injury early in the 2nd quarter of his team’s eventual 23-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills Sunday. The 27 year old took a big hit on a kickoff return and could be seen favouring his right leg almost immediately.

Gibson had been a key contributor on special teams throughout the early part of the season, while also mixing in time at running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. The six-year veteran, took 16.6% of the offensive snaps this season, amassing 25 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown. He also added a 90 yard return for a touchdown in Week 2 on special teams.

While the team has yet to make an official move, Gibson is likely to be placed on injured reserve, freeing up a spot on their 53 man roster. Practice squad player Terrell Jennings could be promoted to their active roster, or the club could also opt to bring in a veteran free agent back as well.

Adding another veteran may be the preferred route here given Stevenson’s fumble woes to kick off the 2025 season. Stevenson has lost 3 fumbles already, putting him in a tie with Carolina’s Bryce Young for the dubious distinction atop that list.

Notable names who are currently without a team include Zack Moss, Jamaal Williams, Gus Edwards, and D’Onta Foreman amongst others.

New England is on the road for Week 6 as the team will travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints in a 1pm ET matchup.
