The Seattle Seahawks are signing wide receiver Cooper Kupp to a 3 year, $45M contract the club announced on Friday.
Kupp, a Washington state native, helps fill the void left by Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf whom the team parted ways with in the offseason. He’ll now lineup across the field from 2024’s breakout star Jaxon Smith-Njigba to form a dynamic pass catching group alongside new QB Sam Darnold.
The 31 year old was released at the start of the new league year after Los Angeles failed to find a trade partner, ending an eight-season run with the Rams. For his career, Kupp has 634 receptions for 7,776 receiving yards and 57 receiving TDs.
Kupp had no shortage of suitors once he became a free agent, as multiple teams were linked to the former Super Bowl MVP. Amongst them were the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, and New England Patriots.
Kupp was a third-round draft choice of the Rams back in 2017 out of Eastern Washington. When healthy, Kupp is one of the more prolific pass catchers in the league. However, the sure handed wideout has battled a wide variety of ailments over the last few seasons. His peak came in 2021 when he earned 1st team All-Pro honours where he won the triple crown, leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16).
Since then however, Kupp has missed at least five games in each of the last three seasons, and hasn’t topped 1,000 receiving yards. Evidently the Seahawks are banking on a homecoming triggering a return to form for Kupp, while also providing an additional downfield threat for their new franchise QB.
