The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has revealed the names and logos for all six of their founding franchises on Monday.
The clubs, who played their inaugural season under generic city branding in year 1, will now have their own monickers, and logos for 2024-25. The announcement came after weeks of teases from the league’s social media accounts.
The six founding clubs will be known as:
Toronto Sceptres
Montreal Victoire
Ottawa Charge
Minnesota Frost
Boston Fleet
New York Sirens
The league also announced that it would be increasing the number of regular season games played from 24 to somewhere in the 30-36 range, with a full schedule release coming later this month.
Team names were a much discussed topic throughout the league’s inaugural campaign, with several fans taking to the internet to ply their trade as part time sleuths. Some of that research uncovered trademark applications, as well as league partners (such as Bauer) having what was likely meant to be secretive information leaked.
While some of the names proved to be red herrings, others proved to have contained the final team names within.
The PWHL’s second season, along with its new look franchises, will take the ice later this fall.
