Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto has been placed on the 10-day IL with right knee soreness and will undergo surgery in the coming days to address the issue.
Realmuto had been dealing with knee soreness throughout the season, and will undergo a meniscectomy on Wednesday in Philadelphia. While the injury isn’t believed to be a season ender, the club has yet to reveal a timeline for his return to baseball action.
The 33 year old catcher is currently hitting .261 with 7 HRs, 28 runs scored, and 20 RBIs across 207 at bats in 2024. In a corresponding roster move Tuesday, the Phillies recalled catcher Rafael Marchan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The 25 year old righty last appeared in the majors in the 2021 season, and is expected to split time with Garrett Stubbs behind the plate for the foreseeable future. Depending on how the procedure goes on Wednesday, Philadelphia could find themselves in the market for a catcher heading into the July 30th trade deadline.
Realmuto’s 2.84 catcher’s ERA currently ranks first amongst all NL backstops, making his absence a tough pill to swallow for the NL East leading Phillies. Luckily, the club’s hot start has given them a 9 game cushion on the Atlanta Braves heading into Tuesday’s slate of games.
Philadelphia is next in action at 7:10pm ET against the Boston Red Sox.
