Detroit Red Wings Extend Michael Rasmussen

The Detroit Red Wings have come to terms with forward Michael Rasmussen on a new 4 year, $12.8M extension the club announced Tuesday.

Rasmussen, who was scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, will now be tied to the franchise through the 2027-28 campaign. His new deal will feature a $3.2M AAV cap hit.

With 23 points (11G, 12A) through 55 games, the 24 year old is on pace to set new career highs in virtually every offensive category.

A former 1st round (9th overall) draft pick from 2017, Rasmussen is viewed as a versatile forward who can play centre or on the wing, and has experience playing up and down the lineup in a variety of situations. This season, he’s spent the majority of his time on a line with Andrew Copp and Christian Fischer, forming a tough to play against checking line given its size.

Standing 6’6″, the Surrey, BC native is amongst the NHL’s tallest forwards, and represents an important depth piece for the Red Wings as they hope to reach the postseason for the first time since 2015-16.
