The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Sean Monahan to a one year $1.985M contract extension the team announced.
Monahan, 28, was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. The deal includes a quirky $15,000 games played bonus, which could bring the total value of the contract to $2M. While it’s not uncommon to see games played or roster bonuses included in deals, the rather small amount was a bit of a bizarre inclusion for a team with ample cap space at the moment.
The former Ottawa 67 suited up for only 25 contests with Montreal last year as he dealt with lower body injuries for most of the season. The 2022-23 campaign was the final year of the 7yr/$44.625M contract he had signed with the Calgary Flames, prior to being traded.
At his peak Monahan was better than a point per game player, recording 82pts (34G, 48A) back in 2018-19. However injuries have taken their toll on the 6’2” forward, resulting in only 140 appearances across the past 3 seasons combined.
In 681 career games at the NHL level, Monahan has recorded 479pts (218G, 261A). The 10 year veteran will be expected to provide some leadership for an extremely young Habs roster this upcoming season.
