The Philadelphia Flyers have been busy making changes to the off ice staff over the last few weeks. Now, the club has announced their first on ice change, paying homage to the club’s history with their latest uniform updates.
What’s old is new again in Philly as the burnt orange jerseys, made iconic by the likes of Bobby Clarke & Co. will be once more added to the team’s rotation for the 2023-24 campaign. The changes mark the first time the team has updated their design since 2010.
Coinciding with the redesign is the announcement that Independence Blue Cross, a Pennsylvania Health Insurance provider, will be the team’s first jersey patch partner as well.
“This New Era of Orange is all about honoring our franchise’s storied past while writing an exciting, new chapter of Flyers history,” said Daniel J. Hilferty, Comcast Spectacor Chairman & CEO and Governor of the Philadelphia Flyers. “These new uniforms represent that sentiment perfectly with details to honor previous eras paired with a fresh, modern design. And there’s no better company than Independence Blue Cross to be our first jersey patch partner! It is an organization that has meant so much to me personally and the entire Philadelphia region.”
The Flyers consulted with season ticket members, alumni, broadcasters, jersey partners and more in putting together the team’s new look. The club is branding their changes as “The New Era of Orange”, changes which extend to the front office, roster, and how the team interacts with the community moving forward.
“These burnt orange sweaters are one of the most iconic symbols of Flyers hockey,” said Keith Jones, Flyers President of Hockey Operations and Alternate Governor. “There’s no doubt that this look is known throughout the NHL and uniquely beloved by our fans because it brings to life one of the most important parts of our rebuild – it honors our past while we continue to forge a new path forward.”
Some of the design changes the team incorporated into their new burnt orange sweaters include:
-Widened striping down the shoulders and arms
-Numbers on the sleeves will be a single colour (first time since the original 1967-1970 uniforms)
-Black horizontal stripe at the bottom of the jersey has been movies down to the bottom edge
-Contrasting nameplate design from 2008 has been re-incorporated
-Burnt orange to be included on both home and away socks for 2023-24
Not to be confused with a 3rd jersey, or reverse retro concept, the Flyers plan to debut their new look, which will be in steady rotation, this fall.
