Mike Weir is making a bit of golf history after it was announced that he will become the first Canadian to captain a President’s Cup Team.
Weir, who will lead the international team when the tournament is held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2024, was officially given the nod at a press conference on Wednesday.
The former Masters champion has played in the event 5 times himself while serving as an assistant captain on three other occasions.
“Presidents Cup has become such a big part of my career, so to be here in this moment announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” said Weir.
“When I look back, I have so many incredible memories associated with this event whether it be my debut in 2000; winning my singles match against Tiger in 2007 at Royal Montreal; witnessing Ernie create the shield in 2019; and then seeing Trevor carry that momentum in 2022,” Weir said. “Now as I look with anticipation toward 2024, I couldn’t be more excited to lead the International Team into my home country of Canada for what will surely be the experience of a lifetime.”
Weir holds a 13-9-2 all-time record at the Presidents Cup as a golfer, including a famous singles victory over Tiger Woods back in 2007 when the event was first held at Royal Montreal.
The 2024 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place between September 19th and 22nd.
