Manchester United target Jonathan David ready to take the next step in European football
LOSC Lille’s star forward Jonathan David has expressed his desire to make the difficult switch from Ligue 1 to the topmost divisions in European football.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, the Canadian international said his goal was to play football in Europe.
He’s enjoyed plenty of success at Lille, having lifted the domestic league title in his debut season and the Trophee des Champions, but David is not ready to rest on his laurels as he eyes the next big club.
“Yeah, you know for me, I was always watching European football on TV. So, for me that was always the goal. For me it was, I only wanted to go to Europe,” he said.
Born to Haitian parents in the United States, the 22-year-old has already bagged an impressive 22 goals for Canada in just 34 appearances.
He featured in 38 league matches last term, notching 15 goals. He’s stepped up the plate this time around, with nine goals in 12 outings. Add three assists to that tally, and it highlights a player with all-round abilities to his game.
David is known for his explosive running, direct play and instinctive finishing. He always knows where the goal is and isn’t afraid to use his combative strength to shrug opponents off.
With a career total of 41 goals in a little over two seasons for Lille, he is confident of proving his worth at a bigger stage.
“The next step is always growing, having more ambition, a bigger club, I think. Every player wants to play for a massive club in their life. So, I think if I had the chance to do it, I’ll go for it for sure,” he continued.
He also listed his personal preferences, adding “I think they’re two different leagues [the Premier League and La Liga]. But I think I can adapt to both for sure. And I think with the experience that I’ve had here in France, it will help me a lot if I need to adapt to someplace else a lot faster. So yeah, I think both leagues suit me.”
David has been recently linked with a move to Old Trafford. While it didn’t materialize this summer, there’s a huge chance for Manchester United and other clubs to join the race for his signature.
The Red Devils could offload Cristiano Ronaldo soon, whilst Anthony Martial’s injury problems continue to pile up. On that note, they will be hunting the market for a centre-forward.
Meanwhile, David and co. prepare for a trip to Groupama Stadium to take on Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, October 30. After a miserable start, Lille have accumulated four wins in their last five league outings.
