He’s on the short list for 2022 NFL MVP favourites, and now Justin Herbert has become only the 3rd NFL player to have a card sell for over $1M. Not only that, his cards eclipsed that mark twice in the same week.
Last week two 1 of 1 Justin Herbert rookie cards each hit the 7 figure mark at auction, as the Chargers’ QB has become one of the hottest names in the collectibles secondary market of late.
A 2020 Panini Prizm Black Finite 1 of 1 Herbert rookie graded a 9 by Beckett Grading Services was sold for $1.1M to Jack Elman and two of his associates early last week. Not to be outdone, the 3rd year signal caller’s 2020 Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield numbered 1 of 1 with an autograph then sold only a few days later for $1.8M at auction.
The figures make Herbert only the 3rd NFL player to have one of his cards fetch north of the million dollar mark joining Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady in the exclusive club.
Collectors are clearly trying to get in on the rush for Herbert memorabilia early, as both Mahomes and Brady have Super Bowls, Super Bowl MVPs, and regular season MVPs on their resumes. Meanwhile LA’s 24 year old QB has only 33 games of NFL experience in his career.
The trio of Mahomes, Brady, and Herbert have the most passing yards in the NFL since 2020, meaning the former Oregon Duck is well on his way to superstardom. If he’s able to add some hardware to his resume in 2022, the hefty sums doled out over the last few days may end up being bargains compared to what the cards values could be down the line.
