Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski is the subject of much interest from FC Barcelona, as the Spanish giants hope to offer him a new challenge in the La Liga come next season.
The report comes from Sky Sports in Germany, who claim that Lewandowski is open to moving to Barcelona and realising his ‘dream’ to play in Spain. The centre-forward’s contract runs out in the summer of 2023, and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg confirmed that there have been talks between Lewandowski’s representatives and Barcelona.
Irrespective of his stupendous goal tally in the last few years, Lewandowski is entering the twilight of his career. The next decision he makes regarding his future is likely to be the last big move in the Poland international’s glittering career. As of now, it is believed that he isn’t willing to commit his future to the Bavarians.
Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich in 2014, and has gone on to score an astonishing 340 goals across 369 appearances for his side. He has always been heralded as one of the world’s best centre-forwards, but many argue he’s exceeding the heights reached by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after the age of 30.
Regarding the transfer possibility, Plettenberg said “We can definitely confirm that Lewandowski can imagine himself leaving the club in the summer. He can imagine himself going to Barcelona and we can confirm that there were talks between his management and with the player. It’s a very specific situation here in Munich and it’s a topic the Bayern bosses don’t want to be having before this very important match. [Champions League second leg against Villarreal]”
Bayern Munich can spend the summer or the time early next season attempting to persuade Lewandowski, but Sky believe Lewandowski’s position is unpredictable. The German journalist added: “Bayern has to do everything to extend his contract but Lewandowski is very unconfident in his situation. He has to commit himself, but he hasn’t done it in the last few days.”
Given their financial situation, it’s entirely possible that Barcelona may not have what it takes to satisfy Lewandowski’s salary demands. If he’s looking for a completely different environment, then it makes perfect sense to depart from German football after 12 successful years.
Lewandowski has scored almost 150 goals in the last three seasons and is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s hard to predict anything but remarkable success for the Polish striker, regardless of where he goes.
