Ronald Araújo is set to renew his contract with Barcelona
Ronald Araújo appears ready to stay at Camp Nou. According to Ferran Martínez, a reporter of the Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan defender will renew his contract with Barcelona through 2026 and the announcement of his renewal will come by the end of this week.
In the past few months, the Catalan club and the player’s staff have been trying to negotiate a new deal, but were at loggerheads trying to settle Araújo’s new salary. Because members from Barcelona’s staff weren’t satisfied with the price the player’s agents were asking, other clubs began to show interest in the young defender including Manchester United and Manchester City.
However, the drama involving the player and his new contract finally came to an end and the Uruguayan will stay at Barcelona, which was his initial desire.
“As MD already reported, there is satisfaction on both sides after giving in to reach an agreement following a lunch at the beginning of April. Araujo, who was to finish his contract in 2023, will extend until 2026, and Barça will armor him with a clause of €1 billion, as it did with Pedri or Ansu Fati,” explained Martínez.
Araújo arrived in Barcelona in the summer of 2018 after strong performances defending the colors of Boston River, Uruguayan club. Before playing with Ter Stegen, Piqué and Busquets, the Uruguayan defender played 44 matches for the Barcelona B team, where he scored six goals and provided three assists, excellent statistics for a center back.
During the 2019-2020 season, Araujo made his official debut for the Catalan squad and has improved tremendously since then. Because of his good performances, the Uruguayan became the number one option to be Gerard Piqué’s partner on the Spanish team defense while also becoming one of the most important players on the Uruguayan national team squad.
Araújo has a true knack for the aerial ball, as he tends to pose a serious threat to Barcelona’s opponents when the team has a corner or a set piece. Undoubtedly he has the capability of becoming a future captain of the club because of his leadership on the field which has been on display recently.
After almost four years living in Spain, it seems that Araújo has adapted well to his new home and he wants to stay at Barça for as long as he can.
“Araujo always intended to stay at Barcelona. He is integrated in the city and the club and wants to make a career at Barça, a team that bet on him when he was 19 years old and playing for Boston River in Uruguay,” wrote Martínez.
