So long as there are no red flags in his physical on Monday, it appears as though veteran running back Nick Chubb is set to sign with the Houston Texans.
Chubb, who made 4 consecutive Pro Bowls between 2019-2022, was widely viewed as the most accomplished free agent RB left on the market. Injuries however have limited the 29-year-old back to only 10 games over the last two seasons.
The former Cleveland Browns star now joins a running back room that also includes veterans Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce, along with rookie Woody Marks, Dare Ogunbowale, J.J. Taylor, and Jawhar Jordan. Per reporter Jeremy Fowler, Chubb and Houston had a mutual interest in working out a contract for some time now.
“I was told that he’s hoping to sign here soon, and maybe he gets something done before a minicamp gets into a team. Four-time Pro Bowler,” Fowler said. “The return to Cleveland’s not totally off the table, from what I’m told, but probably unlikely because of their draft plans, they drafted multiple running backs. I’m told Houston could be one to watch here. They’ve been looking at that running back market, maybe adding somebody with Joe Mixon.”
In his last full season, Chubb rushed for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. While he won’t be expected to carry the same kind of workload he did in Cleveland, he represents a sizeable upgrade over Pierce who failed to provide the kind of change of pace production behind Mixon that the club was looking for last season.
The former 2nd round pick out of Georgia rattled off four consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons prior to suffering his gruesome injury in 2023.
