Denmark’s Eriksen Resumes Training

29 year old Midfielder Christian Eriksen has resumed training in Denmark, signaling he is almost ready to return to competition following his health scare. Many will remember Eriksen as the Danish soccer player who suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark’s game against Finland at the Euro’s this past June.

Following the scary scene, Eriksen spent a week in hospital and had a pacemaker-like device fitted. Currently under contract with Inter Milan, there remains no timetable for his return to professional soccer, however seeing him back on a training field at all is welcome news to family and friends.

Current rules in the Italian Serie A prohibit players from playing with an implantable device, casting doubt on whether he will ever suit up again for his current club. Other leagues have varying rules around the matter, and Inter has indicated that they are open to a transfer if it will help prolong his playing career. Eriksen signed with Inter in 2020 after spending 7 years with the Tottenham Hotspurs.

Eriksen is currently training alone at his former club Odense’s practice facility, in the hopes that he can begin building up strength and stamina ahead of the January transfer window. Christian’s agent stated “Like any person having experienced what Christian has, he is working on his recovery…Occasionally, when he is some time in Denmark and when he feels like it, he may use the structure of Odense BK. Which is a great gesture of his former club…Chris has a positive, optimistic and energetic character, but it is not yet the moment to talk about football. Only Christian will decide if and when this moment will come.”

Eriksen’s current contract with Inter Milan runs through the 2024 season.
