The blows keep on coming for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After starting the year off with a surprising 9-5 record, a string of injuries to key players now has them in the midst of a 3 game losing streak.
The Cavs received more bad news regarding the health of former All-American guard Collin Sexton. The 22 year old will require surgery to repair a torn meniscus in left knee. The procedure and subsequent recovery period will effectively end his season.
Sexton appeared to injure his knee during the Cavaliers 126-109 victory over the Knicks on November 7th. Since then, the organization hadn’t provided much in terms of updates regarding his health until yesterday when they announced that the former Alabama guard underwent surgery in Atlanta earlier that week.
The news is a devastating blow to a Cleveland team that had hopes for a bounce back season after going 22-50 last year. On Thursday against the Warriors, Cleveland was without the services of 6 regulars in their rotation including Sexton, Lauri Markannen, and rookie Evan Mobley. In his absence, Ricky Rubio figures to slide into the starting rotation next to Darius Garland for the remainder of the season.
Prior to his injury, Sexton was 2nd in scoring on the Cavs posting a 16ppg/3.3rpg/2.1apg statline, while shooting 45% from the field.
Cleveland is next in action on Monday as they host the Brooklyn Nets at 7pm ET.
