The reigning Norris Trophy winner, Adam Fox, will be staying in Manhattan for the foreseeable future. The New York Rangers announced Tuesday that they had inked the 23 year old blue liner to a 7-year $66.5M extension with an AAV of $9.5M.
Fox posted a career high 47pts (5G, 42A) in 55 games played last year, 1 point shy of Tyson Barrie’s league leading 48pts in the COVID shortened season. The Long Island native was in the final year of his entry level deal and avoided becoming an RFA at season’s end with his new contract.
Originally selected 66th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 Draft, Fox had quite the journey before ever suiting up for an NHL game. The Flames packaged Fox, Micheal Ferland, and Dougie Hamilton together in a 2018 deal with Carolina that netted them Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin. Fearing that the team would be unable to sign him out of college, the Canes then flipped Fox to his hometown club in exchange for a pair of 2nd rounders in 2019 & 2020.
The offensive minded defenseman put up 116pts in 97 games for Harvard during a 3 year college career before making his debut with the Rangers during the 2019-2020 season. Fox has once again had a hot start to the year with 9pts (2G, 7A) in 9 games to start the 2021-22 campaign with the Blue Shirts.
The move now means the Rangers have a core of Fox, Shesterkin, Goodrow, Zibanejad, Kreider and Panarin locked up long term. The Rangers (6-2-1) take on the Vancouver Canucks tonight at 10pm EST.
