Having dropped 5 of their last 7 games, Manchester United has relieved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his duties as club manager. The last straw appeared to be United’s humiliating 4-1 loss to Watford on Saturday, in which the team looked completely out of sorts from the opening whistle.
In a statement posted to their website, Manchester United reps confirmed the move: “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager.
Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.
Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.”
Michael Carrick will now assume control of the club for the time being as management looks for a long term solution at manager. Carrick is a former player with the club and was also part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff.
Solskjaer had just signed a new contract with the club in July that ran through 2024 with a club option for 2025. He previously replaced Jose Mourinho as manager in December of 2018.
Man U. currently sits in 8th place in the Premier League with a 5-2-5 record, 12pts back of table leading Chelsea. The club is next in action on Tuesday in a Champions League group stage match against Villarreal.
