Tournament officials have cancelled the 2021 editions of the Men’s and Women’s Australian Open. Golf Australia spokespersons made the announcement late Thursday, stating that they hoped to be able to resume competition next year.
The men’s tournament was originally slated for November 25-28th, while the women were set to tee off in February. Because of the uncertainty around international travel restrictions, and even local protocols, officials made the difficult decision to delay the tournaments once more. This marks the second time in the last two years where the tournaments have been scrapped due to COVID and public health concerns.
The Australian Open had been enjoying a bit of a renaissance on the Men’s side recently with big name PGA players such as Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Adam Scott adding their name to the list of champions. On the women’s side, the Australian Open is one of the more lucrative events on the LPGA circuit with a $1.3M prize pool.
No additional details surrounding the 2022-23 events have been released at this time.
