The Sentry Tournament of Champions kicks off at the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort this week with a star studded field and 500 FedEx Cup points on the line. All four major winners from 2021 will be in attendance as well as other prominent players such as Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau.
The ToC is the annual calendar opening event for the PGA Tour. Founded in 1953, the Maui event is restricted only to players who won an event on tour during the last calendar year. With stunning views throughout the course, the Plantation regularly has gusting winds which can lead to both monster drives and interesting approach shots. A 7,596yd behemoth, the Plantation is one of the few par 73 courses you’ll come across, let alone one that hosts a PGA event annually.
Previous winners of the event include Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. In most years, the leaderboard includes multiple players shooting -20 or better through Sunday. Only once (2020) in the past 7 events has the winner not posted a score better than -21. Ernie Els 2003 tournament continues to stand as the highwater mark in terms of course dominance as the South African posted a -31 total over four days.
Odds for some of the more recognizable names include:
Jon Rahm 17-2
Justin Thomas 17-2
Collin Morikawa 10-1
Viktor Hovland 12-1
Bryson DeChambeau 12-1
Xander Schauffele 14-1
Patrick Cantlay 16-1
Brooks Koepka 22-1
Jordan Spieth 22-1
Hideki Matsuyama 22-1
Tony Finau 25-1
Phil Mickelson 125-1
This year’s event will run from January 6-9th. Garrick Higgo and Joel Dahmen will be the first off the tee at 9:40am local time.
