The Boston Celtics and guard Payton Pritchard have come to terms on a new 2 year, $44.2M contract extension on Tuesday per Pritchard’s agent. The deal will reportedly feature a mutual option for 2029-30, and keeps Pritchard tied to the team for an extra year beyond his current contract.
The 28 year old took on a larger role last season as Jayson Tatum recovered from offseason surgery and wound up starting 50 games for the Celtics. Across 79 contests for Boston, Pritchard averaged 17pts/3.9reb/5.2ast per contest while shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc.
Originally selected 26th overall by Boston in the 2020 NBA Draft, Pritchard has spent the entirety of his professional career with the Celtics franchise. Already an NBA champion and 2025 6th man of the year award winner, the 6’1″ guard has been a dynamic contributor as both a starter and role player coming off the bench since entering the league.
With Jaylen Brown now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, Pritchard’s role figures to increase once again for a Celtics team that will be looking to fill minutes and offence. The former Oregon Duck figures to compete with Baylor Scheierman for starting minutes this season, while also spelling Derrick White when the veteran point guard isn’t on the floor.
Boston has two preseason games remaining on their schedule before they take the court for their season opener against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, October 20th.
