Islanders Sign Tony DeAngelo To 2 Year Deal

The New York Islanders and defenceman Tony DeAngelo have come to terms on a 2 year deal worth $4.5M per season on Friday.

Across 76 games in 2025-26, DeAngelo registered 5G, and 30A while averaging 19:08 of ice time per night. The 30 year old blue liner spent a good chunk of time on the team’s top shut-down pairing last year alongside Adam Pelech, becoming a bargain for the team on his 1 year, $1.75M contract.

After debuting with the Coyotes back in 2016-17, DeAngelo has had stops with the Rangers, Hurricanes, Flers, St. Petersburg SKA, and the Islanders throughout his career. A veteran of 482 NHL games, the former 1st round pick has amassed 57G, and 207A over the course of the last 10 years.

Pat Brisson represented DeAngelo in negotiations, and managed to secure a 3 team NTC across both seasons for his client. The extension avoids the veteran defender becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and helps shore up an Islanders defence that narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season.

New York now figures to head into training camp fairly set on their back end with DeAngelo, Pelech, Scott Mayfield, Ryan Pulock, Alexander Romanov, Isaiah George, and reigning Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer all inked to NHL deals. GM Mathieu Darche will have roughly $6.1M in cap space to further tinker with his lineup once free agency opens.

The club currently has 13 forwards under contract, along with goaltender Ilya Sorokin. While Semyon Varlamov remains under contract, the team will likely be in the market for a back up netminder on the cheap as he’s likely to hit LTIR once again with lingering knee issues.

The 38 year old is entering the final year of a 4 year pact, and figures to give the team another $2.75M in cap space if he isn’t medically cleared to return to action in 2026-27.
