Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA single game scoring record on Thursday night, dropping 53 points in her team’s 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.
Prior to the game, the high-water mark was held jointly by Liz Cambage (2018) and A’ja Wilson (2023), but they’ll now add a third name to the record books as the 29 year old seemingly couldn’t be stopped by the Sparks. With her prodigious scoring output, Mabrey set a new Tempo franchise record for most points in a single game, surpassing the 38 point effort from Brittney Sykes earlier this year. She also tied the WNBA single game 3 pointers made record with 9 buckets from beyond the arc.
“I think tonight was just my night from the 3-point line and from honestly everywhere. It was all going in,” Mabrey said after the game. “And then the fans, to have them chanting ‘MVP,’ I don’t know that I ever imagined that. But it was really a good feeling.”
After tying the record, the former Notre Dame standout attempted 2 more 3 pointers, but missed both. She then indicated to coach Sandy Brondello that she was done for the night with roughly 1 minute remaining given the lopsided score. Tempo fans were none too pleased about the substitution, but then proceeded to give Mabrey a standing ovation for her record tying effort.
“She wanted to come out,” Brondello told reporters afterwards. “I said, ‘No, no, you’ve got to stay in for this record.. She was done. She goes ‘I’m out'”.
Over the last 3 games, Mabrey has scored 113 points marking the highest scoring output in a three game span in WNBA history. As a team, the 125 points scored represent a new franchise record for the Tempo who now sport a 9-9 record on the season. That record puts them right in the thick of the playoff mix as the league approaches the halfway point of the season.
Up next for the Tempo is a Saturday afternoon game against the Mercury tipping off at 2pm ET.
