It’s been a tumultuous 24 hours for Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs who was released from jail on Wednesday following his arrest for an alleged domestic violence related incident. The Brown County district attorney’s office informed members of the press that the investigation “remains open and ongoing.”
The 28 year old back was booked on Tuesday on charges of battery, domestic abuse, disorderly conduct, and intimidation of a victim. Jacobs is alleged to have attempted to strangle the victim, which would carry a felony level charge, while the other counts would be misdemeanours.
“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision,” District Attorney David L. Lasee said in a statement. “Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued. Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date.”
An NFL spokesperson said on Wednesday that the league has been “been closely monitoring all developments in the matter” but would refrain from further comment until the case is resolved. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters at practice that the team was aware of the situation, but would not be answering any additional questions regarding Jacobs until the legal process played out.
Jacobs has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, and has told the press via his lawyers that he is hopeful to put the issue behind him once all the facts are brought to light.
“We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him,” attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac said in a statement Wednesday. “As we previously stated, we encourage everyone to keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future.”
After being named to the Pro Bowl in 2024, Jacobs’ production took a step backwards last season as he rushed for 929 yards and 13 TDs on the ground. Across 7 NFL seasons, the veteran back has tallied 7,803 yards on the ground along with 74 rushing TDs split between the Raiders and Packers.
In his absence, Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr. handled the lions share of snaps at practice as the team prepares for the possibility that their bell cow back could face legal repercussions or a suspension from the NFL to start the 2026 season. Green Bay is slated to kick off their preseason on August 13th against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and will travel to Minnesota a month later for their season opener in September.
