The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants pulled off a blockbuster deal on Saturday night which will see Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence head to Cincy in exchange for the 10th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.
As a result, New York will now own both the 5th and 10th overall picks, giving them ample draft capital to rebound from a disappointing 2025 campaign. Meanwhile, the Bengals get some much needed help along their defensive line following the departure of DE Trey Hendrickson who signed a 4 year deal to join the Ravens this offseason.
Lawrence informed the team that he would be holding out of offseason activities and would welcome a trade after negotiations on a multi-year extension had reached an impasse. The 28 year old is coming off his worst statistical season as a pro, but remains one of the most disruptive forces along the defensive interior across the NFL. Only Kansas City’s Chris Jones has more pressures than Lawrence over the past 4 seasons at the defensive tackle position.
Cincinnati will have a new look defensive line heading into the 2026 campaign as Lawrence will join fellow offseason additions Boye Mafe (EDGE), and Jonathan Allen (DT). They will however likely need to hammer out a big money contract extension with their newest acquisition in relatively short order to ensure everyone heads into the new year on the right terms.
It was a steep price to pay, as Cincinnati had never traded a top 10 pick in the modern draft era until this weekend. However, the front office clearly felt that their window to compete was now, and that there wouldn’t be the same kind of impact player remaining when it was their turn to hand in their selection card on draft night.
It’s the kind of calculated gamble that works out for both sides if Cincinnati is able to stay healthy and make a return to the postseason for the first time since 2022. New York suddenly has all kinds of draft versatility on their hands with two top 10 picks which they could theoretically package to move up and get the player of their choice, or stand pat and get two blue chip prospects who will help them over the long term.
New head coach John Harbaugh also removes a potential distraction from the mix in his first training camp with the Giants as the media circus regarding Lawrence’s hold out would have been a story line in New York all summer long.
The 2026 NFL Draft officially kicks off from Pittsburgh on April 23rd, followed by rounds 2-3 on the 24th, and 4 through 7 on the 25th.
