The Detroit Tigers and rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle have come to terms on an 8 year, $150M contract extension which will come into effect in 2027.
After a strong spring training, McGonigle broke camp with the big league club, becoming the youngest player to make his Tigers debut on an Opening Day roster since Omar Infante back in 2003. The deal shows not only the franchise’s faith in him, but also follows a recent trend of buying out arbitration and free agent years for top prospects.
McGonigle’s deal comes on the heels of Konnor Griffin’s contract with Pittsburgh, Colt Emerson’s extension with Seattle, and Cooper Pratt’s deal with Milwaukee. It also effectively removes the first 3 years that he would be eligible for free agency in the process.
Originally drafted 37th overall by Detroit in 2023, the 21 year old heads into Wednesday’s games hitting .311 with 12 runs scored, 1 home run, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base. After beginning the season hitting out of the 6th spot in the batting order, McGonigle has hit almost exclusively out of a top 3 spot in the lineup since March 31st.
Thanks in large part to his ability to get on base, the talented infielder figures to remain a fixture atop the Tigers lineup for the next decade or so. Through the first 17 games of his major league career, McGonigle has reached base in all but one contest thus far. He’s also one of only 10 players across the Majors who has more walks than strikeouts amongst players with at least 11 walks on the season.
Built into his new deal with Detroit are approximately $10M in escalators which could bring the total value of the contract to $160M if each incentive is hit. McGonigle will earn a $14M signing bonus that will be paid up front, followed by a $1M salary in 2027, $7M in 2028, $16M in 2029, $21M in 2030, $22M in 2031 and $23M annually from 2032-34.
If McGonigle wins AL Rookie of the Year honours this season or finishes top-3 in AL MVP voting before he would have previously reached arbitration, the Tigers will gain an extra pick after the first round of the following season’s draft.
Up next for Detroit is a 6:40pm ET showdown with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday evening.
