Mariners Sign Colt Emerson To Record $95M Extension

The Seattle Mariners have signed infield prospect Colt Emerson to a record setting $95M contract extension on Tuesday the team confirmed.

The deal, which spans 8 years, is the largest contract in MLB history for a player who has yet to appear at the Major League level. It will also feature a 9th year team option as well as a full no-trade clause. Despite the massive contract, reports indicate that Emerson will remain at Triple-A Tacoma for the time being.

Seattle’s top prospect slashed .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs and 78 RBIs at three levels last season, ranging from Class A to Triple-A. Originally selected 22nd overall in the 2023 draft, the shortstop posted a solid spring training, hitting .268 with two home runs and several highlight reel defensive plays. Across 3 games in the minors, he’s 5 for 14 with a home run to begin his 2026 professional season.

Those close to the Seattle organization believe that Emerson is the longterm answer at shortstop for the club, and will likely be their Opening Day starter in 2027. Current starter J.P. Crawford is set to become a free agent at season’s end, paving the way for regular at bats for the 20 year old.

That being said, there remains a world in which the left handed bat forces his way into the Mariners lineup with a strong performance at Triple-A. A consensus top 10 prospect, Emerson could theoretically see time at 3rd base, bumping Brendan Donovan to right field and sending Dominic Canzone or Luke Raley to a utility role.

With the extension in place, service time is no longer a concern, so Seattle has little to gain by stashing him in the minor leagues. Instead, the club will simply promote him when they feel he’s ready to take on an everyday role at the Major League level.

With Emerson set to receive the 4th largest guarantee on Seattle’s roster behind only Julio Rodriguez, Luis Castillo, and Cal Raleigh, the club will likely opt to play it safe with their top prospect. Repeating the rough learning curve of former top prospect Jarred Kelenic likely isn’t something Mariners fans want to repeat anytime soon.

Up next for Seattle is a 9:40pm ET home game vs. the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.
