The Denver Nuggets have come to terms with free agent guard Tyus Jones, adding a veteran backcourt presence for the Western Conference’s 5th seed.
Jones began the season with the Orlando Magic after inking a 1 year deal to join the club over the summer. From there, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets, and eventually moved to the Dallas Mavericks at the trade deadline. After joining the Mavs in February, Jones appeared in 8 games for the club, averaging 8.1 assists per 36 minutes, and sporting a 6 to 1 assist to turnover ratio.
However, Dallas opted to waive Jones on Saturday in order to create roster space for Canadian point guard Ryan Nembhard, whom the club converted from a two-way contract to a standard two year deal over the weekend.
The 29 year old figures to provide some additional depth behind incumbent starter Jamal Murray in Denver, while also adding in a new wrinkle for head coach David Adelman when he opts to go small with his lineup. Denver is averaging the 3rd fewest bench assists on the season with only 6.5 per contest, a figure which Jones’ addition should help improve.
Over the course of his career, the former Duke Blue Devil has appeared in 27 playoff games which should keep him in the team’s rotation when the postseason rolls around.
Up next for the Nuggets is a 9pm ET game vs. the Utah Jazz on Monday night.
