Blues Sign Philip Broberg To 6 Year Extension

Blues Sign Philip Broberg To 6 Year Extension

The St. Louis Blues have signed defenceman Philip Broberg to a 6 year, $48M contract extension the club announced Saturday.

The deal will carry an average annual value of $8M per season, and will tie the blue liner to the club through the 2032 NHL campaign. Broberg will then become an unrestricted free agent at the age of 31.

“It’s exciting to have him here for this year, plus six more,” general manager Doug Armstrong said. “That takes him right through the meat of his prime years. … He’s a player, I think, on the back end that we can build around.”

Originally drafted 8th overall by the Oilers back in 2019, the 6’4″ defenceman joined the Blues after signing an offer sheet with the club in 2024. After Edmonton declined to match the offer, Broberg joined the Blues where he’s enjoyed two productive campaigns, and has become a staple on their back end.

Across 194 career regular season games, the native of Orebro, Sweden has amassed 56 points (12G, 44A) and a plus 16 rating.

Unfortunately for both Broberg and St. Louis alike, only a few hours after putting pen to paper on his new deal, the 24 year old suffered an upper body injury against the Vegas Golden Knights. Knights captain Mark Stone delivered an awkward hit to Broberg, who lost his footing and slammed into the ice. Broberg would head back to the locker room just 1:35 into the contest, and would not return.

“He was really excited to play,” said Blues coach Jim Montgomery said. “The team was excited for him after announcing his extension. Unfortunately, he got injured there. We had to go down to five (defensemen) three in four nights.”

The team has yet to announce any kind of timetable for the injury, but both Blues and Team Sweden officials are hoping that it’s on the shorter end of things recovery wise. The left handed defenceman was recently announced as a member of Sweden’s hockey team for the upcoming Winter Games in Italy.

St. Louis is next in action on Tuesday in a home contest against the Carolina Hurricanes.
